Cape Town City winger Craig Martin has described his first iKapa derby against Ajax Cape Town as “special” and “unforgettable”.

The 24-year-old attacker scored the only goal of the game in the second half at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, as the Citizens completed the double over their rivals for a second consecutive season.

Martin’s popularity amongst the blue half of Cape Town has definitely been enhanced with his performance. He created a number of great chances but his finishing let him down on a couple of occasions.

Martin has, however, shown immense growth since arriving on the scene from amateur club Saxon Rovers at the beginning of the season, and City’s management showed this when they recently offered him a new contract.

“I’m happy and grateful that I could help our club do the double over Ajax again as it means a lot to the fans and everyone at the club,” Martin told

“It was exciting for me as it was my first ever derby and the atmosphere was great amongst the local supporters. The fact that I scored the winner makes it special and unforgettable for me.”

City’s interim-assistant coach Vasili Manousakis said Martin delivered on his promise by scoring on his derby debut.

“He said to us before game that he was going score, and he did,” said Manousakis.
