Ajax's Brandon Petersen out to buck derby trend against Cape Town City

Posted: 19 January 2018 Time: 19:30

Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Brandon Petersen admits his side’s poor record against rivals Cape Town City has been on his mind, but hopes to rectify that come Saturday afternoon.

In three previous iKapa derby league meetings over the past season-and-a-half, the Citizens have emerged victorious, with the Urban Warriors yet to find a goal against their new foes.

Petersen has conceded three goals in the two derby losses in which he has played, and despite admitting their poor record against their neighbours is hard to forget, insists the squad are ready and revved up as they go in search of their first Cape derby win.

“Obviously that is on our minds, as we don’t want to be on the losing side every time,” the Ajax shot-stopper tells KickOff.com. “But I think the mood has been really good in the camp, and the guys are really looking forward to the derby on Saturday, and everyone is really motivated to do their best and perform well.”

Under new coach Muhsin Ertugral, and coming off the back of a 3-1 win over Platinum Stars, the Ajax players are highly-charged ahead of the clash, with Petersen acknowledging that Saturday’s derby comes with even extra motivation.

“Obviously you want to have bragging rights – at the end of the game you want to walk out there and say we won,” he says. “And that is extra motivation for the guys, even those not from Cape Town, to be on the winning team, to walk on the streets and be recognised as the winning team. You feel good about yourself and it boosts the team’s morale.

“It’s definitely extra motivation and I think the fans can expect a really good game.”

Kick-off at Cape Town Stadium is set for 15h30.
