Eric Tinkler still depending on Fagrie Lakay at SuperSport United despite Ajax Cape Town loan

SuperSport United coach Eric Tinkler says striker Fagrie Lakay remains part of the club’s plans for the future, but unfortunately, he needed game-time in order to grow.

Lakay was earlier this month sent out to Ajax Cape Town on a short-term loan deal until the end of the season, and has already opened his scoring account with the Urban Warriors.

After playing a bit-part role in Matsatsantsa’s journey through last year’s CAF Confederation Cup campaign, and making only one domestic appearance, Tinkler felt a loan deal was necessary for the 20-year-old forward to get much-needed game-time and development.

“I haven’t let go of Fagrie – he needs game-time. A lot of players we have need game-time, that’s the harsh reality,” defended Tinkler. “Another one is Denwin Farmer, who needs game-time. Is he a talent? Yes, he is a talent.

“Fagrie is a talent, but getting five minutes, 10 minutes or 15 minutes every second or third week is not going to help him progress quick enough.

“We’ve got the other boy Prince Dube – a young striker from Zimbabwe. Six months here and not catching a game, that’s not good enough, he needs to play.

“So, what options do we have? Either playing them in the Diski team or sending them out on loan to ensure they get game-time, and Fagrie is one of those.

“Fagrie is not going anywhere, he’s our player. He’s a quality player, we know what his ability is.”
