Calvin Marlin Ajax's lucky Cape derby charm?

Posted: 18 January 2018 Time: 08:15

Ajax Cape Town assistant coach Calvin Marlin has suggested he could be the “lucky charm” that ends Cape Town City's derby dominance.

The local rivals will meet at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday for the fourth time in two seasons, with the Citizens claiming bragging rights on all three previous occasions.

Marlin recently left his post as a goalkeeper coach at City to return to Ajax, who he represented over a 100 times in five seasons at Ikamva during his playing days.

The 41-year-old is relishing taking on his ex-employers.

“Maybe I’m the lucky charm that can bring luck to change things around for Ajax and to make it 3-1 in the head-to-head situation,” Marlin tells KickOff.com.

“They’ve had the better of us on three occasions but that time I was with City. Hopefully we can change that with me being here now.

“For me it's always interesting coming up against one's former club, you know. Whether it was Sundowns up against SuperSport, I loved to play in these kind of games as it is exciting.”

The one-time Bafana Bafana international says he had no hesitation when his former coach at Mpumalanga Black Aces, Muhsin Ertugral, asked him to serve alongside him at Ikamva.

“I thought this was a great opportunity for me to grow in an assistant coaching capacity,” Marlin says. “No disrespect, but being a goalkeeper coach in this country is like being in a pigeon-hole, you know.

“Muhsin is an experienced and well respected coach. He has a wealth of experience and I'm learning from him every day,” says Marlin of the Turk, who replaced Stanley Menzo at Ajax in December for a fourth stint at the helm.
