Mosimane: Future not bright for Nthethe

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says the future does not look bright for Thabo Nthethe and he'd be spiteful if he does not listen to offers for the veteran this month.

The 33-year-old Nthethe has made only two appearances for Sundowns this season, a clear sign that his time at the club has come to an end.

Motjeka Madisha, Ricardo Nascimento, Wayne Arendse and Bangaly Soumahoro are ahead of him when it comes to team selection. Rivaldo Coetzee will be available to play next season, which means competition would be even tighter for Nthethe.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic defender, who has won the CAF Champions League and two Absa Premiership titles with the Brazilians, has been linked with a move away from the club, and Mosimane feels he can make a good contribution wherever he goes.

“It’s no secret that on the playing side the future is not that bright. He has done well for us. He came from Bloemfontein Celtic and he gave us leadership. He and Alje Schut won the league in 2013/2014. He is a gentlemen, a very good footballer. Sometimes when you age it’s like a lion ageing,” Mosimane tells

“We are not giving him game-time and he understands. He is a professional. This is what happened to John Terry, Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho. Top players, but time ticks.

“If there is an offer for Thabo, it would be wrong for us not to let him go. I think he can contribute [at other clubs]. He’s a guy you’d love to have in the system.”

Mosimane had a similar situation with club legend Surprise Moriri. Even though he rated Moriri highly, Mosimane could not give him regular game-time and the player ended up joining Highlands Park.

Moriri spent one season with Highlands before calling time on his career. He’s now back at Sundowns working as an assistant coach for the MultiChoice Diski Challenge side.
