Benni retains faith in Wits-bound skipper

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy says he will continue showing faith in Robyn Johannes, despite his captain signing a pre-contract with Bidvest Wits.

The Clever Boys earlier this month announced the provisional signing of Johannes, who is currently in the final six months of his contract with The Citizens, and will officially move to Sturrock Park on July 1.

Despite the development, McCarthy has no doubt that the 31-year-old defender will remain loyal to his current employers.

“Robyn is still contracted to Cape Town City, so he knows where his bread and butter lies,” defended McCarthy.

“He knows where his loyalty should be lying up until July the 1st – that’s when everything changes and his loyalty to Cape Town City goes out the window.

“But, up until then, he’s one of the best professionals that you can have. He always does an unbelievable job and he still leads the team as captain.

“And it’s going to remain like that, so whether we play Wits or whoever, I’m going to go for the strongest team that I have at my disposal at the time.”
