Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso says it was important for him to travel to Bolivia to see new signing Gaston Sirino and not rely on YouTube videos.
Sirino, who is from Uruguay, was unveiled at Chloorkop this morning along with Jeremy Brockie, Aubrey Ngoma and Siyabonga Zulu, and will wear the jersey number 26.
Mosimane says Sirino is a similar player to the likes of Khama Billiat, Percy Tau and Ngoma.
“We work hard. You can’t also only rely on scouts, you need to do the job yourself. When you see an important acquisition, you must travel and see because anybody can send you something on YouTube. If I send you a video of Surprise Moriri, you’ll buy him today. You have to see him because I have never seen a scout sending a video with more weaknesses than strengths.
“Sirino is a kind of player that has qualities of Khama Billiat, Percy, Aubrey Ngoma, that kind of quality. I think his body size will tell you that he is not a number nine. He’s got speed, he’s an intelligent player and that’s why we brought him here.
“As I said the 'CBD' [Leonardo Castro, Billiat and Keagan Dolly] is gone or is going, there’s only one player left [Billiat]. We have to make sure Sundowns stays on top and that we are able to win. The CBD has not played this season, but Sundowns is still on top. He [Sirino] is part of the future and we can come up with another combination.”
Mosimane says there’s a gold mine of players in South America, having previously signed Colombian Castro and Brazilian Ricardo Nascimento, who just recently returned from a long layoff.
“You go to South America and find that the mine is still fresh. The mine produces a lot. If Barcelona, Real Madrid and Man City can go to South America, then why can’t we go?”
