Ajax Cape Town assessing Siboniso Gaxa

Ajax Cape Town coach Muhsin Ertugral has confirmed that the club are assessing experienced right-back Siboniso Gaxa, yet reveals there are complications that could hamper a proposed deal.

Gaxa, who left Bidvest Wits following the expiry of his short-term deal at the end of last season, has been club-less since, yet was spotted on the Ikamva training grounds last week as he looks to secure a deal with the Urban Warriors.

Ertugral, who has on numerous occasions made mention of the fact that his squad is thin in the right-back position, says he has been assessing the former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, but says roping the experienced player in is not as simple as it sounds.

“Yes, he’s here,” Ertugral said. “But he hasn’t played since October, if I’m not mistaken. He’s a player I wanted in my time at Chiefs, and when I left, they got him. I love the boy, but there’s contractual issues and other things to consider: can we have him, and what are his demands? That’s up to the management to sort out.

“But most importantly, how quick can he get to what we expect from him? If he takes over six weeks, then that is a problem. We need him immediately. We do have Sirgio [Kammies], but it would be good to have a second player in that position, so we must still decide on that.”

Kammies, 19, has so far been utilised at right-back, with Rheece Evans still out with injury, and although admitting the youngster is a great prospect, Ertugral’s concern is that he is still too raw.

“Sirgio is not a natural wing-back,” he said. “He’s a fantastic player, but if we play him in a back-four, he needs to understand the lines, how to block a game – he needs to learn. And that’s what I was talking about the last time, about the education part – people talk to me about him and say ‘what a talent’, which he is going forward, but not defensively in that position. But he has great potential.”

Following a much-needed 3-1 win over fellow relegation contenders Platinum Stars on Friday, Ajax will head into this weekend’s fixture in confident mood as they prepare to take on town rivals Cape Town City on Saturday afternoon.
