Roger de Sa sheds light on Platinum Stars sale

Platinum Stars coach Roger de Sa has divulged more information regarding the club’s imminent sale, which he says will happen “sooner rather than later”.

With Dikwena’s management undertaking increasing financial strain in making the club profitable and successful, talk of the team’s sale has been rife in recent months, with numerous rumours about when the sale would take place and to whom.

Following another loss for the Rustenburg-based club, this time to Ajax Cape Town on Friday evening, head coach De Sa shed more light on the matter.

“From day one when I joined the club, I met with the king and was told that the club would be sold by the end of the season, or maybe before that,” he said. “So it was never a secret, but just a question of when and to who. It was always going to be that the club would stay where it is, at least for this season, and after that, we’d see.

“The king was always open with the players, who knew about it as well. It can be a bit a bit disturbing for the players, but that fact that it was handled openly was good. But let’s be honest, people work for big companies that get sold, new owners take over, and you carry on – we are in the same industry, and we have to just knuckle down and carry on. Owners will change – Cape Town City changed, Ajax changed, Mamelodi Sundowns changed ownership – many clubs over the years have changed, and that’s how we will continue.

“There’s lots of rumours about who’s buying, and this and that … I do know it’s likely to happen, sooner than later, and hopefully it’s in the right direction, and hopefully someone else’s turn to firstly help the club survive, and secondly do things differently and see how it goes.”

De Sa himself has been reported to be involved in the purchase of the club with a Cape Town-based consortium he is linked with, but the experienced coach refused to divulge any information in that regard.

“Don’t believe everything you read,” he said with a wry smile.

Stars next face league leaders Mamelodi Sundows on Saturday evening.
