Bidvest Wits needs warriors to get them out of trouble in the Absa Premiership and no one is better suited for battle than Ghanaian midfielder Edwin Gyimah.
Gyimah signed for Wits when the transfer window opened after spending time training with them last year. He has already made his presence felt in the team, with a man of the match performance in the 2-0 victory over SuperSport United on Wednesday. It was Wits’ third victory of the season and their first since October 2017.
The former Orlando Pirates man protected the back four and was key to launching attacks with some of his passes from deep in the midfield. He is definitely going to play a big role in helping bottom of the table Wits survive relegation this season.
“I feel good to come into a new team and I think we really did well [against SuperSport]. We put our bodies out there, everybody was focused and determined. We need to keep on doing it everyday,” said Gyimah, who can also play in defence.
“In times like these I embrace the challenge because you need to feel the challenge. If you say you are a player then this is the time you need to prove to people that you can perform for the team.”
Gyimah says coach Gavin Hunt does his best to take the pressure off the players, so that they focus on getting the job done on the field.
“When I came here I was observing. He [Hunt] kills the pressure down. When we come to training after a loss, he motivates us and keeps the pressure away. At the end of the day it’s good because where we are [on the table] it’s about the mindset.”
Wits take on Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium this afternoon (15h30), hoping to get another victory.
“Now we take on Chippa. We need to do what we need to do,” said Gyimah.
