Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has hailed the character of Kevin de Bruyne after the midfielder’s starring role against Watford.

The Belgium international was expected to miss the next few games for the Citizens after being stretchered off with an ankle injury in the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

However, just three days later and the playmaker was starting against the Hornets, helping City to a 3-1 win and a 15-point lead atop the Premier League table.

"Kevin showed great character," Guardiola said.

"He said 'I want to play, I want to play' even though he has problems with his ankle.

"He showed us a lot of things - he gave an outstanding performance."
