Polokwane City midfielder Wiseman Maluleke would love for the club to complete the double over former African champions Mamelodi Sundowns when they meet on Saturday.
Rise and Shine beat the Brazilians 2-1 in the first half of the Absa Premiership season at Loftus Stadium, thanks to a brace from the league’s top scorer Rodney Ramagalela, and will be determined to get another victory over Pitso Mosimane’s men when they meet at Peter Mokaba Stadium (15h30). City, who finished in the top eight last season, are yet to register a win at home in the league this term.
“We want to get points as early as possible [in the second half of the season]. We are playing African champions, so we need to respect them off the field, but once we cross the white line we have to make sure we fight as much as possible to get the three points,” Maluleke tells KickOff.com.
“We hope history repeats itself. It will boost our confidence going forward if we win, considering the position we are in.”
He adds: “The attacking players [at Sundowns] are mobile. They interact very well and they change positions often, so it’s important that we stay compact as much as possible to try close them down and hopefully we can try get them on the counter.”
Currently in 13th place, City have played seven matches at home this season, losing two and drawing five. Maluleke has called for Rise and Shine to start picking up victories on home soil.
“We are not winning at home, but we are getting points away from home. The break gave us a chance to look in the mirror, to say how much are we giving to the club and what can we do to make sure we rectify our mistakes. Hopefully we will win at home. We want to finish in the top eight,” he says.
Maluleke, who joined City from Jomo Cosmos, has played just five matches this season. He’s hoping for more games in the second half of the season.
“I can’t say I am happy. I am used to scoring and creating and that’s not happening. Hopefully my season will turn around as soon as possible.”
