Former Ajax Cape Town striker Nathan Paulse has lauded the club’s signing of Tendai Ndoro.
Ndoro, who had a brief spell at Al Faisaly in Saudi Arabia, has reunited with coach Muhsin Ertugral after they worked together at Orlando Pirates last season.
The Urban Warriors are desperate for someone who can bang in the goals after a disappointing first half of the season. Currently second from bottom, Ajax have scored just 10 goals in 14 matches.
“It’s a big signing for whichever team he would have signed for. For Ajax it’s a good addition,” Paulse says.
“The big question will be what kind of service he will get, which is important when you sign any top striker. You can bring in the world’s best striker, but one of the issues we have seen [at Ajax] is the lack of service from out wide. He’s a good addition, but the service has to be good for him to deliver.”
Paulse believes having the Zimbabwean striker upfront will give Ajax reason to attack much more than they did in the first half of the season.
“It now gives the team a lot more ambition to attack and to play on the front foot. If you know you have someone who is a proven goal scorer, you are more excited to attack because you know who have someone who can cause harm.
“Ndoro knows how to bring players into the game and he can hold the ball up well. Having him in the team will give them a boost and it will ease the pressure on the other strikers in the team. He will now be the experienced one, so he will have to lead upfront.”
Ajax have some big games against Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City. Paulse says this month will paint a clear picture of where the side will finish this season.
“It’s going to be a fight. This first month is going to be key for them. It will say a lot about where their ambitions are. They should be able to get out of the relegation zone, but the race is tight and anything can happen.”
