English Premier League match report Everton v Manchester United 01 January 2018

Posted: 1 January 2018 Time: 21:20

Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Monday evening.

Anthony Martial returned the line up to lead the attack as Romelu Lukaku missed out through injury, while Ander Herrera replaced Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Red Devils dominated the possession in the opening 20 minutes of the encounter, but they struggled to carve out clear cut chances.

Everton managed to sniff out a chance after 26 minutes when Oumar Niasse surged into the box, however Marcos Rojo produced a timely block to deny the striker from six-yards out.

That proved to be the final chance of the half as the visitors were restricted to efforts from distance, none of which troubled Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Five minutes into the second half, United went agonisingly close to taking the lead as Juan Mata rattled the upright with a strike from 25-yards out.

United eventually broke the deadlock in the 57th minute as Martial collected a pass from Paul Pogba before curling the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box, 0-1.

Everton could have leveled matters in the 70th minute when Mason Holgate picked out Niasse, who headed wide at the near post.

With 12 minutes remaining, Pickford came to Everton's rescue as the shot-stopper produced a stunning low save to deny Jesse Lingard from the top of the box.

Lingard was not to be denied two minutes later as the winger skipped past his marker before curling a sublime effort past Pickford, 0-2.

Everton failed to trouble the United defence as they failed to register a single effort on target as the visitors ran out convincing winners on the night.
