The opening day of 2018’s Premier League action was a dramatic one as Liverpool clinched a late winner to see off Burnley, while pressure mounted on under-fire Mark Hughes.

Brighton and Hove Albion 2-2 Bournemouth

Brighton and Bournemouth got the Premier League year off to an entertaining start as they played to a 2-2 draw at the Amex Stadium.

Anthony Knockaert opened the scoring in the fifth minute, but Steve Cook equalised in the 33rd to send the teams into half-time all square.

Glenn Murray netted against his old club within three minutes after the break, but the Cherries came back again. Callum Wilson’s 79th minute equaliser secured a point for Eddie Howe’s side.

Burnley 1-2 Liverpool

A second-string Liverpool side beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor thanks to a late winner.

Sadio Mané opened the scoring 60 minutes in with a left-footed shot on the turn, but Johann Berg Gudmundsson equalised in the 87th.

However, a Ragnar Klavan header in stoppage time sealed the three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Leicester City 3-0 Huddersfield

Leicester trounced Huddersfield 3-0 at the King Power Stadium, getting 2018 off to a perfect start.

The teams went into half-time at 0-0, but Riyad Mahrez broke the deadlock with a stunning 53rd minute strike.

Seven minutes later, Islam Slimani made it 2-0 after Shinji Okazaki had a goal disallowed for a foul. Marc Albrighton then put the cherry on top with a stoppage time goal.

Stoke City 0-1 Newcastle United

Newcastle United claimed an important 1-0 win over Stoke at the bet365 Stadium.

Ciaran Clark missed a sitter in the 30th minute, which could have put Newcastle ahead. However, Ayoze Pérez opened the scoring at last in the 73rd.

This proved to be the winner and heaped pressure on Mark Hughes.
