City make "big offer" for Johannes

Cape Town City owner John Comitis says they have made a big offer to keep captain Robyn Johannes at the club, as he quashed talks about a move to Bidvest Wits as “fake news”.

Having already lost striker Lehlohonolo Majoro to the Clever Boys, the Citizens will be looking to keep their 31-year-old skipper at the club.

Johannes has six months left on his current deal with the club and can now talk to interested parties, but Comitis will move swiftly to ensure the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates player stays in the Mother City.

“Robyn is not going to Wits. There is a big offer on the table for the captain,” Comitis said.

Johannes, who replaced European based Lebogang Manyama as captain earlier this season, has made 19 appearances in all competitions for City this season. He is highly rated by coach Benni McCarthy, who will want his best players available for when they make their maiden appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup next month.

His experience will come in handy when the Citizens embark on their journey on the continent.

Comitis, meanwhile, also added that the club has released striker Letsie Koapeng.

Koapeng, a former junior international who was tipped to be a future star when he burst onto the scene, joined City last season after spending some time in the National First Division.

He made five appearances for the club this season and scored one goal, in a 3-1 victory over Platinum Stars.

“This was done by mutual consent and I wish him all the best for the future,” Comitis concluded.
