Morris: It’s been tough

Ajax Cape Town striker Tashreeq Morris admits it’s been a tough 2017, but says he now feels much stronger as he looks to become a regular on the scoresheet for his club.

The 23-year-old spent much of the past two seasons on the sidelines following a number of various injuries, yet has finally worked his way back to full fitness this campaign – welcome progress after a frustrating period watching from the stands.

“I’ve been out for quite some time – I think two years, if you include last season and the season before,” he says. “I didn’t play many games as I had my ACL done, as well as osteitis pubis [an injury to his pubic bone caused by overloading on the body], which is a very rare injury, and I struggled coming back from that.

“But now I feel good – I don’t know if I can say fully fit, but I hope to keep on going until the next game, and build on from that.”

The South Africa Under-23 international admits his prolonged lay-off took a lot out of him.

“It’s been tough … it took a lot out of me, regarding the rehab and physiotherapy,” he says. “It’s not nice for a footballer to come in every day for eight months and do rehab every day – you want to be out on the field and training with the guys. But you just come in, do your rehab and then just watch the guys train, and it takes a lot from you emotionally as well. But I thank the Almighty for helping me come back stronger than before.”

Having overcome his physical issues, Morris has been used 13 times across all competitions so far this season, netting three goals as he leads the scoring charts at Ajax. But the striker knows he needs to improve those numbers as he targets more goals in 2018.

“As a striker you want to score goals – you want to put more goals next to your name as goals win games for us,” he says. “Obviously I haven’t scored that much, I think I can do much better and score more goals so we can put more points on the table.”
