Bayelsa zoom past Aigle Royale

Bayelsa zoom past Aigle Royale

Bayelsa United rounded off a good weekend for Nigerian teams in continental competition when they steamrolled their way past Cameroon’s Aigle Royal to qualify for the third round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Bayelsa United lost 1-0 in the first leg in Cameroon two weeks ago and went into the business of the day right from Sunday’s kick-off at the Oghara Stadium.

Emma Nwachi should have scored inside three minutes when he found himself in some space and tried to chip the goalkeeper, but the ball went too high and over the bar.

However, it was still Nwachi who opened the flood gate of goals after 27 minutes as he controlled the ball well in the box and placed it past the Cameroonian goalkeeper.

Five minutes later Bernard Okorowanta dribbled into the area and squared for Aruwa Ameh, who blasted past the goalkeeper.

It was Emma Nwachi again in the 34th minute completing his brace. Seventeen minutes into the second half, Gbemi Akinrolabu made it four and then Kadiri Ahmed got the fifth for Bayelsa United on the stroke of full-time.

Bayelsa United coach Monday Odigie was elated after the match, saying: “It shows you can actually get good results when you work hard. We gave it all we had and I am happy to see the result showed for my boys,” Odigie said.

A representative from Cameroon’s centre of information, Emmanuel Pipona said he thought Bayelsa United used the referee to win.

“They are a good club, but I wonder why they need to use the referee to win. They are very prepared, but why? I thought there were incidents that happened during the first three goals that should have made them ineligible but that is what we see,” Pipona said.

However, he said they would not be protesting to CAF over the result of the match.

Congratulations to Nigerian clubs! We have been done proud by these guys. This is hoping that this avalanche of victories will herald a new dawn in club football in Nigeria. I also hope that we'll see more of these scintilating performances. Kudos, y'all!

Is Bayelsa's win a sign that Monday Odigie is set for the U 17 job?

@Trust, thank you for that clarion charge. But now that they have qualified, the Nigerian league is about to come to an end. This means that the lads will not be involved in competitive matches when the proper group stage of the champions league starts.

The only avenue both Pillars and Heartland can adopt when the NPL is over, is to keep playing friendly matches with the U-17, U-20, SE and some university teams to keep them fit and competitive as they are now.

Unless these avenues and others are explored properly to keep the teams busy when the league is over, I will not blame them if they fail.

TRUST, Di Maria, Coache.
Nice caution.
However, he who does well, deserves some praises too and while our celebratings are going on, lets also look at the failures and the departments where the clubs performed badly and criticise them in preparation for the next phase of the competition. This is same warning i gave when the super eagles had 100% run during the first phase Lets take a look again at the closing minutes of the game in Egypt, Kano pillars and Al Aly, if the game had lasted 5 more minutes.........i almost wet my pants!!! God.
@Di Maria, we are not "ranting" we are celebrating while been cautious, please use a better word. Thank you.
It stil baffles me why Chibuzor Okoronkwo, the Olympic defender and the only recently included local player in the super eaglse was not registered for this tournament with Bayelsa United as reported by the club officials, because he was away during registration.

REPORTS FROM DAILY TRIBUNE ONLINE OF TODAY 05-05-09.

DESPITE Nigerian teams’ success stories on the continental scene last weekend, former Super Eagles chief coach, Monday Sinclair, says there are much more to be done to improve the Nigerian league.
Both Globacom Premier League defending champions, Kano Pillars, and Heartland FC of Owerri qualified for the money-spinning group stage of the CAF Champions League, while current league leader, Bayelsa United moved to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
While both Pillars and Heartland saw off stiff oppositions from last year’s finalists, Al-Ahly of Egypt and Cotton Sport of Cameroun, Bayelsa United on Sunday comprehensively whitewashed Aigle Royal de Menoua of Cameroun 5-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup tie.
This notwithstanding, Sinclair believes the Nigerian teams’ performance on the continent is not a true reflection of the poor standard of the Nigerian league, describing the outcome of the matches as accidental victories.
Speaking at the Oghara Township Stadium shortly after Bayelsa United defeated the Camerounian side, Sinclair said he was not impressed with the Nigerian league, submitting that Nigerian teams’ playing system is no longer impressive.
He noted that the unimpressive level of play is responsible for the poor turnout of spectators at league venues across the country.
“I have not been impressed with the Nigerian league,” Sinclair told sports journalists, adding that, “You can see that the ball is always on the other side when Nigerian teams play. We keep the ball so long in one particular area.
“Our playing system is no longer impressive. People are not watching us; you go to the stadia and the stands are empty. This is because we are not playing well. If you understand the mechanism of football, you will know that the standard is very poor.”
