Moloi backs Thopola, Maphanga exits

Chippa United coach Teboho Moloi expressed joy for defenders Diamond Thopolo and Phetso Maphanga following their moves to Orlando Pirates.

The Buccaneers on Thursday announced the signings of Thopola and Maphanga from the Chilli Boys, in exchange for attacking midfielder Thabo Rakhale.

Moloi was delighted for the pair and feels they both have earned the opportunity to ply their trade for a “bigger” club, as he considered their personal growth.

“With Diamond, he’s been loyal to the team and has served the team for so long. It’s for him now to go and test his quality at a bigger team now,” Moloi tells KickOff.com.

“For Maphanga, he’s growing at a very fast rate and I feel like if a bigger team comes his way now then why hold onto the boy? Don’t hold onto talent that you want to grow.

“He might go to Pirates now and then in a few months’ time he could be gone overseas. So the aim is to get our young talent to play at the highest level that they possibly can.

“For both of them, you never know when these chances might come again, so we don’t want to stand in their way.”

Having already had Abel Mabaso provide sufficient cover for Thopola during the latter’s spell out injured this season, Moloi has confidence in Pirates youth graduate Maselaelo Seanego to fill the void left by Maphanga's exit.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a big loss for us because, as you know, we’ve recently brought in ‘Shakes’ [Seanego] and it’s a chance for another youngster to come in and show what he can also do,” adds ‘Tebza’.

“You mustn’t forget, Shakes has represented us [South Africa] at Under-17, U-20 and U-23, and as a country we always complain, ‘where does this talent go?’

“So, it’s time for Shakes to come in, and I need to help him become a better player and move forward in his career, because when last did Shakes play for the national team?

“He’s a bright prospect but because we don’t want to open up spaces for these youngsters they end up idling and not going anywhere or doing anything.”
