Erick Mathoho promises strong Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana comeback in 2018

Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho has admitted that 2017 has not been a good year for him, but promises fans will see the “old Tower” in 2018.

The lanky defender has endured a tough year in terms of form, having lost his place in the Amakhosi line-up as well as the national team setup.

Mathoho last featured for his club in their 0-0 draw with Polokwane City at the end of October, while he was sent off in his last Bafana Bafana appearance during a 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat away to Cape Verde in September.

Reflecting on the past year, ‘Tower’ conceded that he was a shadow of himself, but plans to bounce back in the new year.

“Looking back on 2017, it wasn’t a good year for me, personally, especially knowing what I’m capable of,” Mathoho said.

“But footballers aren’t always on form, which was the case with me. I’ve sat down and reviewed where I was lacking and where I need to improve.

“Sometimes things happen that affect your performances – the two red cards that I got [against Cape Verde and SuperSport United] affected me until I was right.

“I think I have rested, and now I’m fine. It’s in the past now and I am looking forward to the new year – people will see the old Tower in 2018.”

Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has recently turned to Siyabonga Ngezana, Daniel Cardoso and Teenage Hadebe as his core defensive trio, while Lorenzo Gordinho is also lying in wait for his opportunity.

The 27-year-old Limpopo-born centre-back admits competition in the team will be stiff in the second half of the season, but is adamant he will fight to regain his place.

"For me, I told myself that what I did in 2017 was not good enough and that’s why I sat down to talk to the relevant people to bring back my game in 2018,” he added.

“We have me, Siya [Ngezana], Gordinho, Cardoso and Hadebe – five centre-backs. I know it’s going to be difficult because everyone wants to play, but I will obviously fight hard for my place in the team.”
