Benni: I need a goalscorer

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has made it no secret that he is looking for a new striker to bolster his squad ahead of the second half of the 2017/18 campaign.

The Citizens, who have scored 17 goals in their 15 league encounters so far this season, have yet to find a reliable and consistent scorer in their team.

Recognised forwards Victor Obinna, Judas Moseamedi, Letsi Koapeng and youngster Nana Akosah-Bempah all only have a solitary league goal to their name, with out-of-favour Lehlohonolo Majoro – who last featured in the league four matches ago - leading the way with just two league strikes.

And City’s head coach knows this is a major stumbling block for his side.

“The biggest, biggest problem I have is that I need a goalscorer,” McCarthy, South Africa’s leading all-time goal scorer, said. “I don’t have people who have the heart to score goals. We all want to play nice, beautiful football, but no-one wants to take responsibility and put the ball into the back of the net.”

With goalscoring a perennial problem in South Africa, McCarthy weighed in on where he believes the fault lies.

“That’s why the league has the problem that we have,” he continued. “We cry about not having strikers or people that can score goals … no, the players don’t practise and don’t want to score goals when they have the opportunity.

“How many more chances do these players still want before they score goals and win games for their team? If you don’t do that, the opposition will put pressure on you, put balls in the box, put their big players upfront and they will get their reward from a game where they deserve nothing, and get away with a point. We are then the biggest losers on the day.”

City, who end 2017 in second place on the Absa Premiership table following their year-ending 1-0 defeat of Mamelodi Sundowns, square off against Platinum Stars in their first fixture of 2018, scheduled to take place at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on January 6.
