Baroka FC defender Mzwanele Mahashe believes the second half of the season will be tougher

Baroka FC defender Mzwanele Mahashe admits the second half of the Absa Premiership season will be harder as clubs battle to either win the title or avoid relegation.

Baroka go into the Christmas break in fourth position on 22 points after an impressive first half of the season which also saw them winning R1.5 million for being top of the Q-1 standings.

Coach Kgoloko Thobejane believes winning the league title is possible for Bakgaga, but Mahashe says it will be even harder in the second round.

“Obviously there is a huge difference in our team compared to last season,” he tells KickOff.com.

“Anything is possible, but second half of the season is going to be difficult. No team wants to lose and no team wants to go down. No one is safe from relegation at this point because if you win one or two games you go up and if you lose one or two then you find yourself down the table.

“The target for us is to reach 30 points and then we will see where we go from there. But we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves and say that we will win the league. If we get there, then that will be good for this club.”

Mahashe says having a smaller squad this season has been key to them doing well.

“The new players have played their part and obviously people know Doctor [Khumalo, technical director]. There is an influence from him. The changes we have this season have made a difference. We started the season well and there’s been unity and positivity. The squad is not as big as last season and that has been key to us being a unit. We want to keep it up till the end of the season.”

Baroka will return to training next Wednesday to start preparing for their clash with Orlando Pirates on January 6 at Orlando Stadium.

“We are going to train from the 27th to the 29th and then we will come back on January 2 to prepare for Pirates. We need to be ready for that one because it’s a big one. Pirates need points, but I am sure we will be well prepared.”
