Roger de Sa hoping for smooth transition with Platinum Stars sale

Platinum Stars coach Roger de Sa is hopeful the club will fall into the right hands with the sale of the side expected in the new year.

Speculation has been rife in recent months that the Royal Bafokeng Nation have decided to sell the club due to financial constraints, with Rustenburg businessman Thabo Mokgatle tipped to take over.

Stars are currently in 14th place on the Absa Premiership standings, having endured a difficult first half of the season given their off-the-field situation.

De Sa, who took over the head coaching job following Peter Butler’s sacking after just two games, admits the uncertainty has somewhat affected the team’s showing, but reserved praise for the way his troops have handled the situation and got on with business.

“We’re a little bit unsettled now with the sale of the club, we don’t know where it’s going to go and things like that,” admitted De Sa.

“It’s not the ideal scenario but I must say the players have knuckled down and focused on the job at hand, and haven’t worried too much about who takes over the club and so on.

“But it’s always a cloud on the back of your head – is the club going to move? Who’s going to take over? Will the new owner come in and just change everything? We don’t know.”

A particular concern for the former Orlando Pirates coach is whether the new owner will look to dictate on football matters, as he anticipates an announcement later this month.

“So far, the owners have been magnificent, the guy doesn’t interfere and everybody just leaves you alone to work,” he added.

“Who knows, [what if] the new guy comes in and thinks he’s Sir Alex Ferguson, and takes over [the running of the team] – you know what it’s like.

“So, we’re hoping that it falls in the right hands and brings value to the league. I’ve been told that probably by the end of the month [December] we’ll have an answer [as to who it is].”
