Wayne Arendse says Mamelodi Sundowns can send a statement in their final game of 2017 by breaking Cape Town City’s stranglehold over them tonight at Loftus Versfeld (19h30).
Sundowns lost 2-1 and 1-0 last season to the Citizens, whose former playmaker Lebogang Manyama proved to be a thorn in the side of the Brazilians.
Downs, however, will fancy their chances of gaining revenge this evening as they currently set the pace in the Absa Premiership with 28 points - six points ahead of closest trio Kaizer Chiefs, Baroka and Free State Stars, and seven in front of City.
“There’s a lot at stake for us and by beating City we can also make a huge statement,” Arendse tells KickOff.com.
“Besides, they have gotten the better of us in the past therefore we want to rectify matters and break whatever they think they have over us, you know.
“We can definitely expect a very tough match but then again there are no easy matches. Once a team starts to beat you on a regular basis it becomes a psychological thing and we want to eliminate this aspect. So, we are very focused on the match against City.”
Masandawana have games in hand on all their rivals except for SuperSport United due to the two clubs' CAF exploits. Arendse is mindful games in hand do not automatically translate into points in the bank.
“In the past we’ve assumed that we’ve already won these outstanding games on paper you know and that was our mistake. It is very difficult to play catch-up with the games due to our CAF commitments as well and we’ve realised that.
“We will definitely want to rectify things and to treat every game on its individual merit,” concluded the 33-year-old.
