Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde says El Clasico won't decide La Liga title race

Posted: 18 December 2017 Time: 18:00

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has downplayed talk an El Clasico win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Saturday will prove decisive in the La Liga title race.

Barca top the Spanish standings with 42 points from 16 games - six points more than second-placed Atletico Madrid, eight ahead of Valencia and 11 in front of Real, who have a match in hand.

"I don't think a Clasico victory will give us the title," said Valverde after his side thumped Deportivo La Coruna 4-0 at Camp Nou on Sunday.

"Atletico are only six points behind.

"What we know is that this is a long competition, nobody will decide anything at this point.

"We're heading into the game happy.

"We have a week of preparation left and are confident.

"It's a tough game against a huge rival, but we're eager to face them."
