Ex-Brazil and Real Madrid star Kaka retires

Former Brazil and Real Madrid star Kaka has retired from professional football.

The 35-year-old, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2007 before Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo monopolised the award, aims to become a sporting director in his next role.

Kaka ended his playing days with MLS club Orlando City.

"Now I will prepare to continue in football and have another function, but will not be more like a professional player," Kaka, who announced he was hanging up his boots on Twitter on Sunday, told Globo TV.

"I would like to join a club as a sports director, someone who stands between the field and the organisation.

"I prepared a lot to be a professional player, and I want to prepare for this new role, I want to see a little outside.

"The fact that I have had success as a professional player does not mean that I will be a good director, so I want to prepare for it from now on; study, monitor, be closer to some clubs, especially one where I played.

"Milan recently made this proposal (to play before becoming a director)  so that I had there (an understanding of) the day to day of the club.

"These are things that I will start to prepare myself for."

Kaka joined AC Milan in 2003 and spent six years with the Italian giants before joining Real for a then-world record fee of €65 million. He won La Liga and Copa del Rey honours before returning to the Rossoneri in 2013. The following year he headed to the US to link up with Orlando City.
