Ngezana: So far so good

Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana says he is learning as he goes along following his transition from the club’s youth structures to the first team.

Ngezana was promoted to the senior team at the start of the 2016/17 season but failed to make a single appearance as Amakhosi battled to fourth position on the standings.

The 20-year-old then scored on his debut as he helped Chiefs to a 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns two months ago.

The Tholeni-born centre-back says the advice he has been receiving from the senior players as well as the coach has been crucial to his settling in with the first team.

“Staying with the senior team is a motivation itself, they are always there for me when tough times strike,” said Ngezana.

“They give me advice. Even the coach – he always says I shouldn’t be under pressure; I’m still young and I need to learn. I’ll make mistakes, yes, just like everyone else, but the most important thing is to learn.”

Ngezana has so far made 10 starts in all competitions this season, becoming a regular figure alongside Teenage Hadebe and Daniel Cardoso in Chiefs’ last five fixtures.

From those five matches, the trio have managed three clean sheets and only one defeat, with ‘Magwegwe’ relishing each game as he credits his family and the supporters for their role in his transition thus far.

“So far so good. It’s been challenging when we lose matches because this is a big team and supporters always expect more, but we’re still working on it as a team,” he added.

“My family has helped me stay motivated and I always make sure I’m ready and in the right zone when the pressure comes, so that I can be confident enough.

“The supporters have also welcomed me because of my performance, but I won’t say much about the supporters. I’m focusing on myself and what I contribute to the team.”

Ngezana picked up the Man of the Match award as he helped The Glamour Boys to a 1-0 win over Ajax Cape Town on Saturday evening, with the team ending the year in second position on the log.
