Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows played to a 0-0 draw in the KwaZulu-Natal derby on Sunday afternoon.
Mohau Mokate had the ball in the back of the net in the fifth minute after beating goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The Team of Choice dominated proceedings after 15 minutes and found a lot of space in the last third but the hosts denied them clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities.
Knox Mutizwa almost opened the scoring for Arrows in the 31st minute with a glancing header inside the box but his effort missed slightly wide.
Mutizwa had another chance five minutes later when goalkeeper Richard Ofori made an error in the box, but the Maritzburg shot-stopper recovered in time to catch the attempted lob.
Mokate had a chance for the hosts inside the box with a half-volley two minutes before the break but he could not find the target and the first stanza ended goalless.
Two minutes into the second half, Mokate should have made it 1-0 to United when he beat goalkeeper Gumede to a through ball but was unlucky to see his shot miss the open goals.
Lerato Lamola was introduced into the game 10 minutes after the break in place of fellow striker Thomas Chideu.
In the 65th minute, Evans Rusike carved out a chance by crossing for Mokate, who failed to his the target from point blank range.
Nduduzo Sibiya thought he had won Abafana Bes'thende a penalty in the 75th minute after he was impeded by Bevan Fransman inside the box but the referee waved play-on.
The match opened up with five minutes left to play and it was still anybody's game but the two sides just could not find the target and it ended scoreless at full-time.
