Orlando Pirates striker Thamsanqa Gabuza says they have quality in their squad

Orlando Pirates striker Thamsanqa Gabuza believes in the quality they have in the squad, saying “Pirates have never signed a wrong player”.

Gabuza has come under-fire for some of his missed chances in front of goal, but continues to believe in himself and the rest of the squad as they look to end a trophy drought.

The Buccaneers, who face Free State Stars in the Absa Premiership at Goble Park today (18h00), last won a trophy in 2014 under the guidance of Serbian coach Vladimir Vermezovic.

“Pirates have never signed a wrong player. There is a lot of quality at Pirates and the players we have unbelievable,” the striker says.

“The way we play and communicate, it says Pirates is a big brand. The football we are playing shows that there is something that we have, but God is the one who gives us challenges that we need to face. We need to keep going and we need to keep working hard.”

Pirates take on Ea Lla Koto in their final game of the year, looking to extend their unbeaten run to five matches. The Buccaneers want to win the game to ensure they do not fall far behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have three games in hand.

Stars, though, have become a difficult side to beat under coach Luc Eymael and they cannot be ruled out of upsetting the Soweto giants. Ea Lla Koto registered a good result on Wednesday, beating SuperSport United 1-0, and are on a run of five matches without a defeat.

Gabuza, however, says winning the game today is a must.

“We don’t negotiate about that. We need to play well and we need to end the year on a high. It definitely has to happen that we win.”

Gabuza is on three goals this season and will be hoping to find the back of the net today.
