Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says they can't afford to keep striker Amr Gamal

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says the club would not be able to afford to keep striker Amr Gamal after his one-season loan from Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Gamal has bagged five goals in 16 appearances for the Clever Boys this season, but has been guilty of missing some glorious opportunities in front of goal.

He comes with a big price tag for anyone wanting to get him on a permanent deal, said to be over R10 million, but Wits cannot afford to keep him for longer than a season.

“We can’t buy players like that. There’s only one club in South Africa that can buy players like that, not us. We don’t buy players. Our players are free. He’s a good boy and he’s played at the highest level and he has won many things,” said Hunt.

The former SuperSport United coach says the striker is loving life in South Africa and he’ll keep encouraging him to ensure he is motivated.

“Foreign players normally take a long to settle down in South Africa because the game is very different here, but he is getting in the culture of the team. We’ve just got to keep encouraging him.

“He’s loving it, enjoying it and it’s a totally different mindset. He is enjoying it more because he gets to touch the ball here more than in Egypt. He’s had umpteenth chances, so I have to keep believing in him. It’s all I can do.”

The Clever Boys will take on Platinum Stars at Bidvest Stadium tomorrow night (20h15).
