Free State Stars' Patrick Phungwayo says referee Victor Gomes will never change

Posted: 14 December 2017 Time: 11:30

Free State Stars left-back Patrick Phungwayo doesn't believe he deserved a red card for his tackle on SuperSport United's Siyabonga Nhlapo.

The former Orlando Pirates man received his marching orders from referee Victor Gomes midway through the second half, although Stars went on to win the match 1-0 at Goble Park last night.

"In all honesty... it's frustrating you know to get a red card like that because it wasn't intentional," Phungwayo tells KickOff.com

"So it wasn't an intentional tackle for him to give me a straight red card. He is not gonna change. Victor Gomes, he is always gonna be like that. He asked if he could give me a red card. He asked, 'should I give him a red card?'. I think he was asking the linesman because I don't think he saw but even the linesman, I did tell him it was harsh for me to get a straight red card."

Phungwayo is now suspended for Ea Lla Koto's next two games against his former employers Pirates (Saturday) and Bidvest Wits (January 5).

"To be honest I'm just looking to improve my game, that's it. Obviously I am missing two games, not only the Pirates one you know. The problem is I'm gonna miss two crucial games and the unfortunate part is that my son was born yesterday and I get a red card. I'm back home in Johannesburg as we speak because I left Free State yesterday. I wasn't here when he was born as I was in camp. Maybe God wanted me to spend more time with my son. We will never know but that's something everyone told me after the game yesterday."
