SAFA president Danny Jordaan believes Bafana Bafana belong in the top three of African football

SAFA president Danny Jordaan believes Bafana Bafana belongs in the top three of African football and is hoping coach Stuart Baxter can get the team to move up the CAF rankings.

Bafana had a year to forget as they failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, after Baxter replaced Shakes Mashaba as coach of the senior side.

Bafana, who are currently ranked 18th on the continent, finished bottom of their qualifying group following four defeats in six matches and they will now watch world football’s biggest competition from their living rooms.

Jordaan, however, is hoping the team can recover from the disappointment of not qualifying for next year’s showpiece in Russia by moving up into the top three

“We must move forward and qualify again. We last qualified in 2002. That’s 15 years ago, so we have to make more effort,” said Jordaan.

“I think we have the broad base of players, as you can see our Under-20 team performing in Zambia [COSAFA Championships].

“We just hope the coach will regroup and get us back to where we belong, and that is in the top three on the African continent.”

Bafana’s next mission is to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Cameroon. Bafana are on three points after beating Nigeria 2-0 in Uyo in June.
