Cristiano Ronaldo insists the FIFA Club World Cup is a “very important tournament” for Real Madrid as they prepare to begin their title defence on Wednesday.

The Portugal international has twice lifted the global cup before, with Manchester United in 2008 before again clinching gold during last year’s instalment.

And, speaking ahead of this evening’s semi-final against Al Jazira, Ronaldo told beIN Sports: "It is a very important tournament for us.

"It's obviously a pleasure to play it because you can only do it if you've won the Champions League.

"I've had the chance to win the Club World Cup with Real Madrid and also with Manchester United.

"It's a competition that I like a lot.

"What I want is to win and if it's possible to score and help the team win this cup."
