Andile Jali suffered Belgian Cup heartbreak on Tuesday night as last year's finalists KV Oostende were knocked out of the country’s premier cup competition in the quarter-finals.
Coming up against Standard Liege, with whom they had played out a goalless draw in the league last month, Jali was included in the starting line-up for the last-eight showdown at the Versluys Arena, and was celebrating with his teammates just 17 minutes in as Dutch striker Richairo Zivkovic put Oostende in front.
Liege levelled matters through Orlando Sa as the teams headed into the break deadlocked at 1-1, yet the visitors needed just two second-half minutes to take the lead, Romanian midfielder Razvan Marin registering his name on the scoresheet.
Renaud Edmond then made it 3-1 to the visitors on 82 minutes, as Jali was substituted two minutes later for Guinean midfielder Ibrahima Conte as Oostende looked for an unlikely late surge to rescue their fading hopes.
Striker Zinho Gano would get a goal back in the 93rd minute, but it was too little too late, as last year’s beaten finalists succumbed to a 3-2 defeat, with Liege advancing to the last-four.
Oostende, who had not been beaten in seven games prior to the weekend, have now lost two games in a row, and will need to shift focus to their next league encounter against 11th-placed Royal Excel Mouscron, who sit one point above them on the table, on Friday.
