Bucs drop points at Orlando

Posted: 9 December 2017 Time: 12:44

Orlando Pirates missed a host of chances as they drew 1-1 with AmaZulu at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

Usuthu pressurised the Buccaneers high up the pitch and Mhlengi Cele almost opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a free header inside the box but his effort deflected over the bar.

Milutin Sredojevic's charges were exciting going forward at pace but rushed their moves as the final ball let them down.

Luvuyo Memela almost put the hosts ahead in the 20th minute as he let fly with a powerful low drive that missed the target by inches.

Usuthu grabbed the lead in the 24th minute as Cele's cross was turned home by Pirates' Ntsikelelo Nyauza for the own goal, 0-1.

Nyauza redeemed himself in the 35th minute after Memela's strike hit the post against the run of play and the defender poked home into an empty net, 1-1.

Both sides pushed for a second goal in the remaining 10 minutes of the stanza, but it remained 1-1 as the referee brought a close to the half.

Sredojevic altered his line-up 10 minutes into the second half, as he brought on Thamsanqa Gabuza in place of Ayanda Nkosi, while Cavin Johnson brought in Mabhuti Khenyeza in the 64th minute.

Justin Shonga nearly sent the Buccaneers ahead a minute later with a curling shot on the far side of the box but Boafela Pule did well to tip the effort over the bar.

In the 70th minute, Gabuza was sent through one-on-one with the goalkeeper but Pule narrowed the angle to make a crucial stop.

Memela had his chance five minutes later with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Pule came out tops again.

Gabuza squandered another opportunity in the 80th minute where he was clear on goal inside the box but he tripped himself by taking too many touches.

Siduduzo Dlamini hit the crossbar in stoppages with a free-kick from 25-yards out as Usuthu nearly stole it but the two sides settled for the share of spoils.
