Hope springs eternal for Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela

Posted: 8 December 2017 Time: 08:00

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has admitted feeling frustrated by his side’s missed opportunities but refuses to lose hope.

Chiefs are now winless in their last five league matches, while they have only managed one goal, dating back to their 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in mid-October.

In their 1-0 defeat to Chippa United in midweek, Amakhosi registered just two of their 11 attempts on target, while they average 11,2 shots per match with an accuracy of just 27,6 percent in all of their 13 Absa Premiership matches this season.

However, Komphela insists, as the principal figure, he cannot lose hope or show frustration at his players’ wastefulness but rather provide encouragement despite their circumstances.

“At our position, you can’t think like everybody else. In as much as you feel an element of frustration, you can’t show frustration. You have to keep working on this,” said Komphela.

“You are the last one to lose hope; you are the last to show frustration, because at the back of whatever your actions or reactions, there are players, supporters, everybody, so you are the first one who must always give hope.

“That requires strength – you must be very strong to withstand that. But there’s a need for us to take these chances, there’s no match we play in which we don’t get chances, and clear-cut chances that you’re saying, ‘but when is this thing going to hit the back of the net?’

“But you can’t lose hope, you can never. You have to keep working and remain hopeful forever, irrespective of the circumstances.”

Chiefs next face a trip to Platinum Stars on Saturday afternoon, with kick-off set for 15h30.
