Pep Guardiola says Manchester City's first loss of season will only make the team stronger

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admitted losing for the first time this season “hurts” but expects his side to bounce back stronger than ever.

The Citizens saw their 28-game unbeaten streak snapped on Wednesday following a 2-1 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in the final round of UEFA Champions League group-stage matches.

That proved City’s first taste of defeat in some eight months, and while it has left a sour taste in the mouth, Guardiola expects it will only make the team stronger going forward.

"It hurts. It is never nice to lose a game," he said. "But we have said many times we cannot win all the time, we are going to lose games. Today was the first.

"We needed to lose a game. It will be good for the club, for all of us and the media. People say things when you win a lot and you can forget that now.

"We saw many good things but we made mistakes and we are going to improve on that. Football is how you recover in the good moments and bad moments to stay stable."
