Under-fire Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo unafraid of getting the axe

Posted: 6 December 2017 Time: 13:15

Under-pressure Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo says he’s unafraid of receiving the axe, admitting his record this season could have seen him fired already.

The Urban Warriors have endured a tough 2017/18 campaign so far, winning just two of their 12 matches across all competitions, as they sit 14th on the Absa Premiership standings, level on points with bottom-of-the-log Bidvest Wits, who they face in tonight’s midweek league fixture.

Menzo acknowledges that based on his record, he could have already been fired, yet insists he has been in constant contact with club boss Ari Efstathiou on how to solve the problem, and is unafraid of the axe.

“I have to be honest, I have to be realistic,” Menzo said. “In football, in my situation in the team, it’s not easy, and the only thing you can do is try and solve it, with Ari and the players.

"It’s not easy for him – I think normally in my situation, it could be that I was not here anymore. If that’s the case, then it’s like that.

"But, for me, I am not afraid of those things; I’m only afraid of things I have a hand in but can’t do anything about.

“So yes, we have had talks about what we can do, and if it doesn’t work, what else we have to do. I can’t share them with you, but we have had talks.”

Following tonight’s clash at Bidvest Stadium, Ajax will remain in Johannesburg to face Chippa United at the same venue on Saturday.

The Cape club have been prevented from playing their home fixture in the Mother City owing to the unavailability of Cape Town Stadium due to the Rugby 7s tournament taking place this weekend, while all other available venues have not reached PSL standards amid the severe drought in the Western Cape.
