Polokwane City right-back Thabiso Semenya wants first home victory in the Absa Premiership

Posted: 6 December 2017 Time: 12:30

Polokwane City defender Thabiso Semenya has stressed the importance of getting their first home win of the season to avoid dropping to the bottom of the Absa Premiership table.

City face Semenya’s former side Platinum Stars at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium tonight (19h30), needing a victory to move up the table. City, who are in 13th place, are just two points ahead of second-from-bottom Dikwena.

Rise and Shine have played six league matches at home this season, drawing four and losing two.

“This season we have not won a game at home. We only won on penalties against Ajax in the Telkom Knockout, so we need to make sure we do better and get a win at home,” Semenya tells

“You look at the position we are in and the position they are in, then you can see that this is a bottom-of-the-table clash. If they beat us, they will move above us and if Wits win [against Ajax Cape Town tonight] we will be even closer to the bottom. So we are going to fight hard and get our first win at home.”

The right-back, who has played nine of City’s 11 matches in the league, says Stars have improved under the guidance of Roger de Sa, who replaced Peter Butler early in the season. He says the only problem; however, is that they often defend too deep and end up making mistakes at the back. This is something City can take advantage of tonight.

“They changed their coach and they are adjusting to his philosophy. I watched them against Baroka. They are good in terms of holding the ball and they can play it around.

“If you are at the bottom, you score one goal and then you think about defending that lead. You have a fear of losing, so they defend too deep and that’s where mistakes happen.”
