Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United played to a 0-0 draw on Tuesday evening at Orlando Stadium.
Thamsanqa Gabuza had a chance to put the Buccaneers ahead in the eighth minute after receiving a ball at the far post but his grass-cutting shot hit the side-netting.
Jeremy Brockie should have opened the scoring in the 11th minute after a floating ball fell on his lap inside the box but he blazed over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
After half an hour, Milutin Sredojevic's charges started to get out of their half and looked to create opportunities but their combinations were not established yet.
With 10 minutes to go in the half, Eric Tinkler's men enjoyed a spell of possession in the final third and Brockie could have broken the deadlock in the 37th minute but his shot rattled the woodwork.
Clayton Daniels missed a glorious chance in the six-yard box three minutes before halftime as he ballooned his shot over the crossbar, before Jackson Mabokgwane denied Brockie in a one-on-one situation moments later.
Thuso Phala missed the target by a few inches 10 minutes into the second half following a brilliant free-kick from 25 yards.
The Buccaneers showed improvement in the second stanza as they played further up the field.
In the 70th minute, Mpho Makola was unlucky to see his low shot sail agonisingly wide of the post after beating goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse from closer range.
Musa Nyatama fluffed his chance for the home side three minutes from time after being left alone with a lot of space.
Sifiso Myeni nearly snatched victory for SuperSport in stoppage time, but his effort from distance sailed wide of the upright as the sides settled for a share of the spoils.
