Mamelodi Sundowns will give Baroka FC the respect they deserve

Midfielder Hlompho Kekana says Mamelodi Sundowns will give Baroka FC the respect they deserve as Absa Premiership log leaders.

Baroka are top of the standings on 19 points, three ahead of fifth-placed Sundowns, who have three matches in hand. The sides meet at Lucas Moripe Stadium tonight (19h30), as league football returns following the Telkom Knockout final over the weekend.

Sundowns have not done too well at home this season, losing all three matches in their backyard against Polokwane City, AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs. Pitso Mosimane’s men will be looking to get their first win at home, but Baroka won’t make it easy for them.

The Limpopo-based club, who have remained top of the table despite not winning in their last five matches, are dangerous on the attack and they have improved at the back compared to last season. The visitors would no doubt want to maintain their spot at the summit.

“The game will be difficult because we are playing against a side that’s top of the table. It will be difficult for us to break them because their confidence is high,” said Kekana, who scored against Bakgaga at Peter Mokaba Stadium last season.

“They like playing the ball and they like opening up play. We need to give them the respect because they are a good side and they are top of the table. But we want to win the match.”

Sundowns struggled for form in October, but they have shown signs of improvement since beating Orlando Pirates 3-1 last month.

They went on to beat Bidvest Wits 2-0, thanks to a brace from star man Khama Billiat, and they got a point away from home in a tight match against Chippa United. A win over Baroka could see them moving to the top of the table, depending on results in other matches tonight.
