Tashreeq Morris feels Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town don’t deserve to be bottom of the log

Tashreeq Morris insists the current Absa Premiership table is not a true reflection of the bottom sides’ quality ahead of Ajax Cape Town’s midweek encounter against Bidvest Wits.

In an effective bottom-of-the-table clash, with both teams on nine points after 11 games with just two league wins apiece, a victory will be greatly valued in Wednesday night’s battle at Bidvest Stadium.

Yet Morris, Ajax’s leading goal scorer with three strikes to his name, insists neither side deserve their lowly position in the standings.

“I don’t think Wits’ team is a reflection of where they are lying on the table,” he said. “They’ve got a very good squad. As well as us – the way we play, I don’t think we should be where we are on the table. If you look at our game against AmaZulu and [Bloemfontein] Celtic, I think that’s the best we’ve played. And even the second half against SuperSport United, I think we played fairly well and should have come back and even won the game, but it didn’t happen for us. But we just have to keep on going, soldier on and hope for the best.”

As the Urban Warriors’ main outlet for goal, Morris admits there is added pressure for him to find the back of the net to help lift his struggling side out of trouble, but is aware he cannot put too much pressure on himself either.

“As a striker, before the game, you tell yourself you need to score – that’s your job, that’s why you’re a striker,” he said. “So there is a bit of pressure, but I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself as a player as it will probably affect my performance.

“I try go into each game with a clear mind and ask the Almighty to grant us as team a good performance and for me to score goals.”

Kick-off tomorrow is set for 19h30.
