Stanley Menzo wants Ajax Cape Town players to feel the pressure

Posted: 4 December 2017 Time: 15:19

Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo hopes his players can use the pressure they’re under to their advantage ahead of a tough midweek trip to Bidvest Wits.

The Urban Warriors, who are winless in four games, travel to the newly-crowned Telkom Knockout champions for a league clash on Wednesday evening desperate for three points, as they sit joint-bottom of the log alongside the Students and Platinum Stars.

Menzo understands the urgency of their situation and is hoping his charges will rise to the occasion.

“I hope the players feel the pressure, as the pressure is there,” he told reporters. “It’s a normal thing in football, and you have to deal with the pressure. As coaches we try keep the pressure as low as possible, but it’s urgent in this moment, so they have to deal with the pressure and be sure that we focus on doing the things we can do. All the things out of our control, like Wits having won the final, it’s lots of energy … so we need to focus on ourselves, as otherwise we make it too difficult.”

Menzo admits facing the TKO winners having endured a tough few months will not be easy, yet says the club has to deal with the situation, despite feeling that luck is against them.

“When you are in a situation where things don’t fall your way, it always goes like that,” he said. “And now I’ve heard their [Wits’] whole back four is back. But we have to handle that … I always say we have to think about ourselves. They’re a team that have been given a lift, a boost as they won the cup final, but you can’t change that – we have to deal with it.”

Kick-off at Bidvest Stadium is set for 19h30.
