Mosimane’s top five signings

Posted: 4 December 2017 Time: 11:00

On Sunday Pitso Mosimane celebrated his five-year anniversary with Mamelodi Sundowns. KickOff.com looks at the five best signings he has made since taking over at the club.

1. Khama Billiat

The Zimbabwean international joined Sundowns as a promising player from Ajax Cape Town, but his football was taken to another level when he started working with Mosimane. His first touch and finishing in front of goal improved and, in the 2015/2016 campaign, Billiat was just unstoppable. He won the footballer and players’ player of the season awards. He was a key member of Sundowns’ CAF Champions League squad, earning himself a nomination for the African Player of the Year award, for players based in Africa.

2. Bongani Zungu
He joined Sundowns as an attacking midfielder from University of Pretoria, but his position changed. Mosimane likes telling a story of how Zungu was not keen to play in a deeper role. Zungu was, after all, scoring the goals for Tuks, so it made sense why he wanted to keep playing in an advanced role. But Zungu blossomed in a deeper role and is now making a name for himself in Europe and he's a Bafana Bafana regular.

3. Keagan Dolly
Dolly came from the Sundowns development, but was sold to Ajax. Mosimane bought Dolly and loaned him out to the Urban Warriors for one season. Dolly finally joined in 2015/16 and was a star, establishing himself as a regular on the left wing. He formed part of one of the deadliest partnerships in PSL history, known as the 'CBD', with Billiat and Leonardo Castro. Dolly played a key role in the Champions League triumph and is now playing his football in France.

4. Thabo Nthethe
The man known as 'Mr Cool' joined Sundowns halfway through the 2013/2014 campaign from Bloemfontein Celtic as the Tshwane giants went on to win their first league title in seven years. Nthethe has captained the team many a time and has played a pivotal role in all of the trophies Sundowns have won during Mosimane’s tenure. He is struggling for game-time at the moment, but he remains a key member of the squad.

5. Tiyani Mabunda
Mabunda joined Sundowns at the start of the 2013/2014 season from Black Leopards, with Raymond Monama and Rodney Ramagalela. At some point the midfielder was loaned out to Free State Stars and it looked as though he would never make the grade at Sundowns. But when a few players were missing due to injury and suspension in 2015/2016, Mosimane turned to Mabunda and the midfielder did not disappoint. Mabunda, who has earned himself national team call ups, has formed a great partnership in midfield with Hlompho Kekana.
