Spanish La Liga match report Athletic Bilbao v Real Madrid 02 December 2017

Posted: 2 December 2017 Time: 17:12

Real Madrid were held to a 0-0 draw by Athletic Bilbao at San Mames on Saturday evening.

Karim Benzema could have opened the scoring for the hosts in the seventh minute after some slick passing on the edge of the box but his strike rattled the post.

Cristiano Ronaldo had a lot of space on the left wing to cause trouble and was a constant threat on that channel although he could not hit the target with his efforts.

After 30 minutes, Jose Zigunda's troops were playing with freedom out of their own half and Inaki Williams almost grabbed the lead for the hosts with a great strike but Kaylor Navas was equal to the task.

Toni Kroos had a chance to find a breakthrough in the 41st minute but his strike sailed just wide after the German midfielder did well to control the ball on the edge of the box.

Ronaldo had chances on the left-wing with galloping runs in the closing minutes of the first half but he could not combine with Benzema to perfection upfront.

The first stanza ended goalless in an open encounter that lacked clear goalscoring opportunities.

Williams, who was Athletic's stand out performer, caused a lot of problems on the right wing but the final ball let him down.

Ronaldo and Isco were combining well after 65 minutes but Benzema, on numerous occasions, could not read their movements to capitalise on their creativity.

Zinedine Zidane's men were getting closer to finding the breakthrough with 15 minutes left to play as Ronaldo hit the outside of the post from the edge of the box.

Zidane made a double substitution in the last five minutes, as he took off Benzema for Borja Mayoral while Mateo Kovacic replaced Isco.

Los Blancos were reduced to 10 men in the 87th minute as Sergio Ramos received his second yellow card in the match for a late challenge.

Nevertheless, the two sides settled for the share of spoils in the end.
