Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo is living on borrowed time after the Urban Warriors suffered yet another Absa Premiership defeat on Wednesday night.
Menzo, though, has played down the pressure currently on his shoulders, saying there’s always a need to deliver whether he wins or loses.
Ajax are third from bottom on nine points, with just two victories and a concerning six defeats. They have scored just nine goals in 11 matches, conceding 15 times.
Menzo’s men were beaten 1-0 by losing CAF Confederation Cup finalists SuperSport United at Mbombela Stadium yesterday, as Aubrey Modiba scored the winner.
Menzo did not go into detail, but he said there are certain things he cannot change.
“There’s always pressure. When you win, there’s pressure that you have to win the next game. When you lose there’s pressure still because you also have to win, so there’s always pressure. It’s normal in sports. I know what it is, so we deal with it,” he said after the game in Nelspruit.
“There are certain things I can do and there are certain things I can’t do. I am focused on the things I can do and the rest we will have to see. We have to deal with this loss because it’s not easy to lose.”
Menzo believes his side could have performed much better in the first half against Matsatsantsa.
“I was not happy with the first half. I told the players that and I think they also knew it. The second half was better, but because of the first half we had to chase 1-0 and it’s not easy against a team like SuperSport. You have to be careful that they don’t catch you on the counter.”
Ajax’s top scoring striker is Tashreeq Morris with three goals and Prince Nxumalo has two goals. Sedwyn George, who joined Ajax after finishing last season as the top scorer in the National First Division, is yet to find the back of the net for the senior side. Menzo will need his strikers to start delivering.
