Booysen: SSU are still hurting

Ajax Cape Town defender Mario Booysen hopes to capitalise against a “bruised” SuperSport United side ahead of the only Absa Premiership encounter this week.

The Urban Warriors face a Matsatsantsa side still smarting after their CAF Condeferation Cup final loss to TP Mazembe, as the Pretoria side look to make up their seven-game deficit in the league.

Booysen, who spent two years with SuperSport before moving back to the Cape at the start of the season, feels his former side will still be hurting, and knows they will be looking to put that defeat behind them as soon as possible, with tonight’s league encounter an opportune time to do that.

“They will be switching their focus now to the league, but they will still be hurting,” the Ajax centre-back said. “As a footballer, you never like to lose in a final, especially when there’s a lot at stake. And I think they’ll will come out and try to make things right against us, because they are also behind in the league and want to climb the table.

“But they are still bruised over the final, and we are bruised as we should have won on Saturday [against AmaZulu], but we have to take advantage of that.

“They are an experienced squad, they have good players, but I think we should just worry about ourselves, put effort into what we can do and control what we can control.”

Tonight’s encounter takes place at Mbombela Stadium – another away match for Ajax, who have won just one match on the road in their last 15 attempts dating back to last season.

Yet Booysen refuses to be bogged down by that dismal record.

“It’s all about our attitude at the end of the day – we have to apply ourselves in a professional manner, whereby we go for it,” he said. “Yes, we don’t have a good away record, but with each game we have an opportunity to make it right and change things. We will stick to our gameplan, what we know, and go for the win.”

Ajax are in desperate need of points, sitting 14th on the log and level with bottom-placed Bidvest Wits, while SuperSport are a point ahead, but with five games in hand.

Kick-off at Mbombela Stadium is set for 19h30.
