Bidvest Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo says Bloemfontein Celtic are favourites going into this weekend’s Telkom Knockout final, but has warned the opponents not to underestimate them.
Wits are bottom of the Absa Premiership table on nine points, while Celtic have made huge strides under coach Veselin Jelusic this season, after last term’s disastrous campaign.
The two sides meet in the final at Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday (18h00), with hopes of winning silverware before the end of the year.
“Celtic are the favourites,” said Hlatshwayo at the launch of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge in Soweto on Monday.
“Sometimes if you look at the history, teams that are not doing well in the league end up winning trophies. Looking at where we are, it’s easy for them to underestimate us because we have not been doing well in the league. But as a team we have to make sure we bring silverware.
“Coach Gavin [Hunt] has said that he wishes the wins in the Telkom Knockout were three points, then we could have been sitting in a proper position. The MTN8 is gone for us and we have to go all the way to win this final on Saturday,” the Bafana Bafana skipper said.
“If you look at our history in the Telkom Knockout, we have been knocked out in the first round. It’s good to see that the team has managed to go to the final and the guys are raring to win this cup.
‘Tyson’ is aware that they will be doing a lot of running on the night to keep up with some of Celtic’s speedy players, such as Kabelo Mahlasela, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Deon Hotto.
“Celtic has been doing well. They have a lot of speedy and skilful players. We have to make sure that we bring our A-game on the day.”
