Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 0-0 draw at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Brazilians enjoyed a lot of possession in the early stages of the match but mostly in their own half.
The hosts waited for their chances on counter-attacks and they got one in the 10th minute where Abel Mabaso had a great opportunity to open the scoring inside the box after turning the defence but his low shot hit the upright.
Percy Tau had a chance to open the scoring in the 21st minute from a free-kick on the edge of the box however his left footed strike sailed slightly over the bar.
After half-an-hour, the game opened up on both ends of the pitch as the Chilli Boys grew in confidence and burst out of their defensive shell.
Khama Billiat sliced a defence splitting pass to Tau who made a blind run inside the box in the 38th minute but Daniel Akpeyi came out quickly to slide and claim the ball to deny the visitors a sure chance at goal.
The pace of the game slowed down in the final five minutes of the first stanza and it ended all square without the goals.
