South African attacking sensation Phakamani Mahlambi featured for the first time for new Egyptian side Al Ahly on Monday night, making his debut in a 2-0 away win to log leaders Ismaily.
After signing for the Egyptian giants in September, the 20-year-old had to bide his time as The Red Devils continued their progress in the CAF Champions League – a tournament Mahlambi was not registered for – making their way to the final before narrowly losing 2-1 on aggregate to Wydad Casablanca, who had earlier knocked holders Mamelodi Sundowns out of the event.
Following the FIFA international break, Al Ahly were this week able to continue with league matters, with Mahlambi named on the bench for the first time in his side’s trip to Ismaily, who top the Egyptian standings after nine games played.
And the young South African, who scored six goals in 13 games for Bidvest Wits last season, eventually made his bow, coming on for the last 27 minutes in a 2-0 victory for his side. It was Mahlambi’s first competitive game in over six months, his last being a 3-1 league loss for Wits against Free State Stars on 10 May.
The youngster, whose only international cap came in a friendly against Angola this year, was called up to the latest Bafana Bafana squad for their back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Senegal, but was unused.
Al Ahly’s win on Monday night moves them up to ninth on the log, seven points behind Ismaily but with four games in hand as they play catch up following their CAF commitments.
